It’s BBQ Season – Here’s Some Great Burger Recipes!

Grilling burgersSpring has sprung, and summer isn’t too far away.  For some folks, that means a return to grilling outdoors on the BBQ.  In anticipation of that, I’ve been doing a bit of “research” and trying different burger recipe variations to find some that are not only great tasting, but are great healthy alternatives to the “normal” beef patties.

Here’s a few recipes that I’ve personally tried (so far, probably more to come) and would recommend:

Do you want to be the “Burger Queen (or King)” of your family?

If so, consider following these tips to grill up perfect patties every time:

  • Quality counts - for the best tasting burger, you must start with quality meat (organic, hormone-free, lean) and fresh veggie condiments;
  • Size does matter - make the patties 1 inch thick (or less) or the outside may char before the inside is fully cooked;
  • Keep them slick - brush the patties, not the grill, with oil to keep them from sticking;
  • Turn up the heat - preheat the grill on high for about 10 minutes and then lower to medium heat for cooking;
  • Handle with care - flip the burgers only once. And, never press down on them as that forces out flavourful juices;
  • Play it safe - make sure it’s cooked - red meat is done when internal temperature is 160 F, cook fish to 145 F and poultry or veggie burgers to 165 F;
  • Don’t over cook - take your burgers off the grill as soon as they’re done to avoid overcooking. Remember, they will cook a little bit after they’re taken off the grill; and,
  • Use better (healthier-for-you) buns - for more nutrients, get buns that list whole grain flour as the first ingredient or opt for the gluten-free variety.

Barbeque grilled foods are great for most diets. They’re usually lower in fat than many other cooking methods and, when done right, taste great!
